Opinion: AI can aid climate action newsthirst.

Artificial intelligence offers tools that can aid the fight against air pollution and climate change, according to a Jan. 20 Forbes commentary by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health data science expert Francesca Dominici.

Using AI can help scientists harness massive amounts of data to more quickly and accurately develop climate models, and to identify populations likely to be most affected by exposure to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, wrote Dominici, Clarence James Gamble Professor of Biostatistics, Population, and Data Science, and director of the Harvard Data Science Initiative. This work can provide evidence to inform life-saving regulatory actions and policy interventions.

But it is crucial that AI’s environmental footprint be carefully managed, she noted. Carbon emissions from data centers in the U.S. are growing but measures such as increasing the efficiency of AI algorithms or increasing the energy efficiency of data centers may help, she wrote.
